Protector C spray is to be sprayed on the walls of cupboards, floors and windowsills where clothes moths land and are seen regularly. The spray will kill the moths and stay active for up to 6 weeks. The spray sticks to the moths feet or is ingested through their breathing area if used as a space treatment.
Residex P Powder can also be used when treating moths, where spray is not safe such as near electrical sockets as well as on windowsills. In a similar way to the spray, the powder sticks to the feet of the moths once they land on a powder protected surface.
Protector FCIK instant kill spray that instantly knocks down and kills any moths or other flying insects within the room. You may find that the aerosol causes the moths to drop to the floor and roll onto their back. The insecticide causes a malfunction of the brain of the moth as it approaches death often causing it to lose the capability to fly.
Moth balls and proofers help repel and keep the moths away from your clothes. Again we would recommend using alongside a pest control treatment to protect your possessions from the damaging effects of clothes moths.
Moth traps use pheremone technology that attracts the moths to the cardboard sticky trap. Traps can be placed in cupboards near clothing as well as near to where rugs and carpets are stored. The traps help protect expensive rugs without the risk of causing any issue with the rugs themselves. Traps are often used in conjunction with traditional pest control treatments to fully eradicate the infestation.
How do moths damage clothes?
There are 3 life stages to a clothes moth, the egg, the larvae and the moth itself. When 2 adult moths mate, an egg is produced. This egg then hatches into Larvae after 14 days, existing solely as Larvae for a period between 80-200 days. This larvae will achieve 4-5 malts before it finally turns into a fully fledged adult moth. Larvae is a maggot or caterpillar like insect that actually causes the damage to your possessions, rather than the adult moth itself.
Typically, wherever you have the moth damage on your clothes or carpets, the actual nest will be situated above the point where the damage is occurring.
Why are the Moths eating my clothes?
The larvae of the moths are attracted to the cellulose within your wool based possessions including clothes, rugs and carpets. The Moth Larvae will also eat synthetic, polypropylene based carpets that may only have a 20-30% wool content within their construction. You may then find that the synthetic elements of your rug or clothing have helped the Larvae build their nest where they are based (remember this will typically be above the damaged areas
Will the products kill the Larvae?
The Fortefog fumers and spray will both kill the Larvae. As Larvae is often situated in a difficult place to access (for example under a coffee table if they are damaging your carpet), with the fumers the smoke rises to the top of the room and therefore it is difficult to predict if the entire Larvae will be killed. We would therefore recommend using a combination of fumers and Protector C spray when tackling the Larvae, as well as cleaning and wiping the area once the Larvae is killed.
